Frequently Asked Questions.
-
How long will I be off work?
This depends on what surgery you have had and what your job is. With most foot and ankle or knee surgery, the first two weeks is important to elevate your leg and let the wound heal without infection. You will also likely have anaesthetic to recover from.

When can I drive?
If you are in a cast or moonboot on your right leg, you will not be able to drive until the surgeon says this can come off. You should also be off crutches and able to perform an emergency stop. Each surgery and patient will be different. You cannot drive or operate heavy machinery for 24 hours after a general anaesthetic.

When can I travel/fly?
Flying or travelling long distances can increase your risk of venous stastis and venous thromboembolism (VTE). Following most lower limb surgeries, you will be given Aspirin to take daily until you are mobile and using the leg normally. This is to reduce the risk of blood clots (DVT). If you are going to be travelling longer distances soon after surgery, we recommend you discuss this with your surgeon or GP to get adequate protection.
